"Tutoring & School Reform: Standards, Ethics, & Other Issues"

Ed Gordon presents a cogent research–driven perspective on what we know and don't know about tutoring. This presentation links theories, research, and practice together in a coherent manner to provide recommendations and strategies to help improve tutoring across America. Ed also includes practical guidelines for selecting a tutor and proposes ethical and regulatory tutoring standards. This presentation will appeal to audiences of educators, researchers, or parents. If a true tutoring revolution is to benefit American education, their participation will be essential to further effective tutoring and improve consumer safeguards. (His Book: The Tutoring Revolution: Applying Research for Best Practices, Policy Implications, and Student Achievement)

"The Tutoring Revolution: What Works and Why"

School reform is more important than ever before. Yet tutoring programs have largely failed to help the sutdents who need it the most. Based on a critical examination of tutoring practices over the past 30 years, Ed Gordon explores the following questions: What do we know about tutoring? How can it be made more effective? Why does tutoring work better for only some students? When does tutoring produce the best results? This program will present a summary of tutoring best pratices and the key components that support high-quality tutoring. (His Book: The Tutoring Revolution: Applying Research for Best Practices, Policy Implications, and Student Achievement)

"Who Has Time to Read"

Never before have more Americans enjoyed the benefits of literacy. Yet too many people who lack advanced literacy skills are in danger of becoming the new "techno–peasants of the information age."  Ed Gordon addresses why this situation has come to pass. How do past literacy lessons still apply today? What vital role can you play to popularize a literacy revolution in your community? He answers the great literacy question we now face: Do enough Americans see the need to raise personal literacy significantly in order to preserve democracy and also become part of a global knowledge workplace? Much of the future of our republic may hinge on the answer! (His book: Literacy in America: Historic Journey and Contemporary Solutions)

"Peer Tutoring: Mobilizing Student Creativity"

Drawing on over 30 years of research, Ed Gordon now shares his discoveries on ways to make peer tutoring a very powerful means for increasing student achievement.  He outlines how to plan, train, and manage high-quality peer  tutoring programs and provides case studies from elementary, secondary, colleges or community volunteer programs (customized for the audience being addressed). He also shows how to win support from parents, teachers, administrators, and the students themselves in beginning and sustaining successful peer-tutoring programs. (His Book: Peer Tutoring: A Teacher's Resource Guide)

"Navigating the Tutoring Marketplace: Finding Quality Tutors for Better Achievement"

How can tutoring better prepare more students for daily classroom learning? What are the characteristics of the best tutoring programs? Who are the qualified tutors in your community, and how can you contact them? What questions help to evaluate how well a potential tutor matches a specific student's educational needs? Based on over 30 years of Ed Gordon's case study research and tutoring programs, this presentation will help teachers, parents, and others better address these significant education and consumer issues. As a tutoring consultant to the Better Business Bureau and many state boards of education, Gordon brings a national perspective on tutoring best practices to help local school/community tutoring programs. (His book: Tutor Quest: Finding Effective Education for Children and Adults.)
